The Freedom of Dance

Everyone dances for a different reason. , For some, it is a hobby, for others, it’s a full-time career, a way to lose weight, and for some others, it’s just their favorite thing to do when they are happy. However, for some people, dancing has a more personal meaning in their lives, it can be a way for them to express themselves, an escape, or freedom to keep strong and face the challenges in their daily lives.

What is dance?

Dance is an art form, belonging to the “performing arts” category that consists of movements in sequences that are either improvised or intentionally created.  This movement has an artistic and often symbolic value. Dance is categorized and described by its choreography, its range of movements, or by its historical and traditional period or place of origin.

The real question is what does dance mean to you as an individual? How did dancing become a part of your life and what does it means to you today? Dance has a different meaning and purpose for every individual and it assumes a meaning depending on what it can do for you.  It is a natural form of self-expression – the body naturally expresses itself giving the person a feeling of freedom. Through dance, our body expresses how free we can be, while also highlighting the restrictions our minds impose on it.

Dance is an art form in which human movements become the tool for expressing, communicating, and understanding ideas, feelings, and experiences. The elements of dance are the basic concepts and language for developing movement skills as well as understanding dance as an art form. All these elements are present in dance or in a short movement phrase. Through dancing, individuals can express feelings and emotions, communicating a message to the audience. Through dance, you can experience the freedom of emotion through your body movements,  which creates confidence in yourself.

Why do you dance? Why do you want to dance? This question lingers as you see why people would take so much time and effort to even enroll for dancing classes. We see kids, teens, adults and even old people enrolling for dance class not just to learn to dance, but to have a space where they can dance freely  as much as they want. As a dance instructor, you can observe the students, especially the kids as they discover their freedom and power through dancing. Giving the students the chance to explore themselves through dancing gives them a sense of freedom and power that fulfills them inside.

Giving them the freedom to dance the way they want to is not about realizing how much they were doing but on how they were doing it. Were they smiling, happy, internally focused, discovering who they are, and each one doing their own thing?

Why do you dance? It is not just about skill and how good you are as a dancer, dancing has a bigger and deeper meaning,  you may feel wonderful, you may feel powerful, and you may feel free as you let your body take over and dance to your heart’s content.

Just like we use the phrase  “ freedom of speech “ that gives people the right to express their own opinions and thoughts, “ freedom to dance “ gives people the right to express their thoughts and opinions to their audience through dancing.  The real question is not about why you dance, it is about what you feel which answers the question on why you want to dance. You go to dance class not just to learn how to dance and be good at it, yes that is one reason, but the bigger reason would be what you feel while dancing. if you give in to the freedom of dancing, you feel like the best version of yourself. You are your best self when you dance. The feeling and sensation that flows through your body as you move and perform to the music, every single part of your body responds and makes your feel full and free to be who you are.

  1. We make sure you are in a safe environment that allows you to be vulnerable, take risks and be open to share and communicate with others. To make you feel not afraid to spend time building a community in the class. We have created a space where it is essential to express your own individuality over what is right or wrong movement, and showcasing what each student and dancer can bring to the class.
  2. We let our students explore what their body can do through dancing, the endless possibility of their movement within a safe and open space, time and energy. We help our students trust their own bodies as a dancer, and discover their own potential to express who they are and what they can do with their bodies with dance.
  3. Dancers need the opportunity to create, to improvise and choreograph, the freedom to dance on their own.We let each dancer be seen and open up and share their movements to one another.
